If you are a graphic artist, you probably have several different graphic programs gathering dust and taking up disk space on your computer because you probably have one or two basic programs that you use all the time. These will either be the ones you learned first or have come to appreciate over time for either their features or their ease of use. But, what any serious graphic artist really needs is a complete set of integratedprograms to satisfy your creative urge such as Macromedia Studio or Adobe Creative Suite. However, these packages are very expensive and usually beyond the means of someone who is just starting out, like a college student. Luckily, if you shop smart, you can save a great deal of money when purchasing these products. One of the easiest ways to satisfy your need for high-performance programs is to purchase the academic software version. Academic software packages are also commonly referred to as student software. If you attend any accreditededucational institution you can probably qualify for student softwarepurchases which can save you a lot of money. Academic software packages arethe same programs sold to businesses but priced so students, teachers and schools can afford to buy them. The only requirement is that you agree to use the software only for education and not for commercial business purposes. Most academic software packages are designed for student use in classroom environments where thy have access to their instructors as well as other students. As a result, student software packages do not usually include user manuals or any other materials normally included in the “full” boxed retail version of the software. The availability of free online tutorials (try Googling "free tutorial") can compensatefor the student software package’s lack of a printed user’s manual. However, many of these programs come complete with excellent online help files and built in tutorials so there are more than enough resources available for you to learn everything you need to master even the most advanced software features. These academic software packages allow you to save anywhere for 60-80% off the retail price. Major software companies specifically designed the student software packages to allow students to learn their craft on the latest versions of professional software. They do this for two reasons: to be good corporate citizens and contribute to educating students and for sound business reasons. The software companies know that most people will use the first software package they learned completely throughout their entire career as long as it still meets their professional needs. This simple marketing strategy crates lifelong customers for these software companies. You will have to prove that you are a student or teacher to purchase academic software packages. All you will need to do is send a copy of your staff ID, student ID or class schedule along with your order. If you believe that you are eligible for the student software discount, contact your school's bookstore or, to save even more, order it online from an academic software reseller.
MPEG, or Moving Picture Experts Group, is a jointly working group comprised of the International Standards Organization and International Electro-Technical Commission (ISO/IEC) to standardize the coding of moving pictures and the associated audio in a digital compressed format.MPEG-2 uses very sophisticated compression techniques to compress audio and video in order for it to be burned on a DVD. You can purchase and download hardware and software MPEG Encoders to burn a DVD. MPEG-2 is the process needed to encode video and audio information for a DVD burner, by burning the information onto a DVD disc with time stamps. The process of an MPEG encoder for burning DVDs is done using codec’s to encode the video and audio and save it in smaller pieces to be transformed into a frequency space and then quantized.MPEG-3 is one of the discontinued encoding processes for digital media, and is often confused for MPEG-1 (what we know as MP3). MP3 encoding has quickly become the standard for digitizing music around the world, and listening to it on your computer, laptop or personal MP3 Player. Most people burn mp3 songs to CDROMS, however for digital archiving, some people burn the files to DVD as well.To burn a DVD, you need a DVD burner, an MPEG Encoder, a blank DVD-R (recordable) disc and the audio and video that you wish to burn onto the DVD-R. MPEG Encoders can be bought as hardware or software and downloaded to transform and compress your audio and video file into MPEG format so that it can be burned onto a DVD using a DVD Burner. The process itself is quite complex and took a team of specialists to perfect. However, the process is streamlined where you as the end user are only expected to follow short, simple commands by the software to burn your encoded data. You can search the internet for a suitable MPEG encoder and also for a DVD burner that will best suit your needs. Your local computer shopping store will also have a variety of DVD burners with some expert advice on which products will best work for what information you are looking to encode and burn. And lastly, when in doubt about which MPEG compression algorithm to use to encode your data, “google” it. Chances are that you are not the only person who has had a question regarding MPEG encoding and DVD Burning. By doing your research early, you can ensure your next burn will go smoothly!

You can achieve sophisticated results by compositing images, text, and effects on hundreds of layers that you control by grouping into sets, color coding, and locking. You can simulate traditional fine-art techniques with dry and wet brush effects, pastel, charcoal, and more and even use brushes to add special effects such as grass and leaves. There are tools to improve the color, contrast, and dynamic range of any image, easily remove dust, scratches, blemishes, wrinkles, and other flaws with the Healing Brush. Photoshop can give high quality output by working with the complete raw data files from most major digital camera models. It’s great all-around imaging software. Photoshop is taught in all graphic curriculums and had to be included in the student software package.Adobe IllustratorAdobe Illustrator is also taught in every school’s graphic curriculum and is another essential part of a student software package. It is also an essential tool for anyone who needs to express ideas visually in print, on the Web, and in any other medium. When my clients send me a rough pencil drawing of the logo they want for their business, I create the logo in Illustrator then import into Photoshop to get it ready for their web page.Illustrator has great 3D features, advanced typographical controls, Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) integration and enhanced printing options. Illustrator will help create and efficiently publish your artwork anywhere. One of the nicest features is the ability to apply live effects without affecting the underlying artwork, so you can edit at any time without starting over. There are blending modes and transparency effects similar to those in Photoshop software but, unlike Photoshop, Illustrator has intuitive tools such as the Pencil, Smooth, Erase, and Pen tools. Adobe InDesignInDesign is the best page layout software available and is the choice of most print design professionals. Personally, I prefer Dreamweaver but golive is an excellent HTML editor and completes the suite for a web designer. Although usually on touched in classes, GoLive is welcome addition to any student software package.Adobe AcrobatAcrobat is the number one tool used to create the widely used PDF document format. With its built in security features that can prevent the user from copying or changing the document and the ability to require a password to open the document, acrobat is still one of the leading choices for creating paid e-books. This program is an absolute necessity for a web designer and therefore a welcome addition to the academic software package.Adobe Version CueVersion Cue is a file manager that tracks the different versions of the files you create with the graphics as well as some others. It is a very nice tool if you have several people collaborating on a project since you can maintains a complete change history of the files.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) has been the basis for file transfer since the dawn of the internet. The truly remarkable feature about FTP was that it was operating system independent. Files could be smoothly transferred between Unix, Windows and any other operating system. The other cool feature about FTP was that a simple validation mechanism consisting of a username and a password could be used to limit access to files. However, the actual data itself was transferred unencrypted and it was easy to intercept and listen in on an FTP connection. The internet itself had very negligible security built into it. Consisting of many smaller independent networks that stretched across the globe, the path that a data packet took to get from point A to point B was unpredictable. With the popularity of the internet, it became essential to be able to transmit many types of critical data with some amount of security. Netscape Communications solved the security problem on the internet by developing the Secure Sockets Layer Protocol (SSL) which used public key cryptography to encrypt data transmitted over the internet. This is still the widely accepted security mechanism and is implemented by all web browsers.FTPS Secure File TransferModifications to the FTP protocol were released to incorporate the use of SSL for encrypting file transfers over the internet. The modified mechanism is referred to as FTPS. In order to maintain backwards compatibility with the original file transfer protocol, an FTPS connection could either be explicit, where the connection between the client connection and the server starts out as regular FTP and then negotiates a secure connection, or implicit where the connection starts out being encrypted.HTTPS Secure File TransferSince a web browser is already capable of public key cryptography, simple downloads and uploads can be performed directly through a web browser using the HTTPS protocol. This means that special FTP Client software is not required.SFTP Secure File TransferThe Secure Shell protocol also known as SSH was developed by Tatu Ylonen to enable secure access to remote shells using public key cryptography and replace Telnet and other non secure shells. This protocol has since evolved to also support a file transfer mechanism known as SFTP. The main advantage of this mechanism is that it did not require the opening of an additional data channel connection for transferring files. All of these three methods of secure file transfer are based on public key cryptography and all of them are equally capable of securing the transfer of critical files across the internet. The only drawback of these methods is that there is a data overhead associated with encrypting files. There is also a performance overhead associated with encrypting the files at the source and decrypting them at the destination. Because of this, system administrators sometimes use regular FTP for file transfers within a secured internal network. However, for transferring files over the internet, this is a small price to pay in exchange for the guarantee that sensitive files reach their destination without being intercepted or tampered with.
Once you have booked your domain, finalised your hosting service provider and got your website designed, you are ready to enter the online world. But your offerings may fail to excite the customers if they fall short in customer expectations. Today’s internet friendly customers aspire for more and more features in a safe, secure, customer friendly way. This helps the customers to reduce time spent in shopping and at the same time saves the business owner from incurring overhead costs. To provide these services on your website, you will need application software that will enable the entire process to run smoothly. The development of this application software for your website is popularly known as website application development. In general, website application development consists of a wide range of software and web applications that are required to facilitate the business needs. You will find even smaller software development companies offering website application development services these days along with the established software giants. It is, however, necessary to choose according to features of software mapped with your needs. Though many will advocate for software from a renowned company due to the established reputation and functionality, you should be convinced that the software meets your real-time business needs.A typical website application development company will present you with a range of software in the field of e-commerce. In case you wish to sell any product from your website, or allow people to make donations or book tickets etc. then it becomes very necessary that you provide a methodology on your website for the customers to do so. Good software is one that has adaptability to get customised to all levels. One thing that you should be concerned about while choosing for a website application development vendor is the maintenance offered. Many website application software come with embedded features that let you tweak the design at a later stage by allowing you to change photos, content and layout without much knowledge about HTML and Web Development. With the increase in interest of the business owners towards online medium, website application development companies are also gearing up to offer such easy-to-use functionality rich software.
Is your computer slow starting up? Does the desktop screen take forever to load?
Do you always have to wait and wait after Windows loads before you can begin to work? Slow computers are usually said to be a sign that your PC is underpowered and badly in need of some more RAM memory, though this is not always the case.
Very often the problem is not hardware related at all, but software related, and a few quick, simple adjustments is all that's needed to get your computer back up to speed.
Best of all you don't have to be an IT expert to use these techniques, these are simple little tweaks that any Windows user can do, quickly and safely.
1. Turn off your sound.
Windows sound files can take up a large amount of memory when played, like for example, on start-up. Turning these sounds off will have a dramatic effect on start-up times and system performance in general.
Setting your sounds scheme to "no sounds" does not disable your computer's audio, it simply means that Windows will no longer play the welcome music on start-up, nor will it play all those blips and clicks when you click on or close applications.
2. Active Desktop and Themes.
First check to see if Active Desktop is disabled. If not disable it and disable any themes that are being used. If you wish to use a screen saver use one of the generic Windows ones rather than a third party one. Photo slideshow screensavers should also be avoided.
3. Performance Settings.
Your performance settings are under the Advanced tab in System Properties. (Right click on My Computer and select Properties) Click on the Settings button and under "Performance Options" select "Adjust for Best Performance". This disables all the inbuilt scrolling and shadow effects and other graphical eye-candy that serve no real purpose.
4. Disable Automatic Updates.
Automatic Updates not only slow down system performance but also your internet connection. Disable them via Control Panel and install Windows Updates manually instead.
5. Uninstall unnecessary programs.
Go into your Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and have a look down through the list. Is there anything there you could get rid of? I bet there's at least one program you haven't used in months. I bet there's even one or two that you installed once and never used since.
6. Disc cleanup.
Launch the Disc Cleanup tool. Select the drive or drives you want to clean then follow the on-screen instructions to free up space and clear out unnecessary files.
7. Defrag it!
How long has it been since you defragged your hard drive? Never? Well then it's about time you ran the Disc Defrag tool. This tool will then go through your hard drive or drives and tidy up all the files and put them all together so it can read them from the disc quicker and easier.
Don't expect it to be done in a hurry though, you're best off to set the computer to defrag overnight, or, failing that, you'll want to put on several cups of strong coffee.
These techniques can be used in either Windows XP or Windows Vista, though the exact location of certain tools or menus may differ. Additional information can be found in your Windows help files or via a quick Google search.
In today’s highly competitive and fast paced environment of online marketing and website promotion, everyone needs to market and advertise their websites in order to reach the right target customers. Flash banners are one of the best marketing tools available for this purpose. A flash banner is a new form of online advertising which is quickly replacing traditional marketing method. Flash banners are designed to attract visitors to the advertiser’s website, thus increasing exposure of the website. Flash banners are embedded in various websites, just like billboards that we can see on high-rise buildings or television advertisements that we see in between our favorite shows. Flash banners are popular amongst giant websites, such as Microsoft and Nokia.
Traditionally banners have been created using GIF files. But Flash banners have been proven to return better results than animated gifs, especially in displaying advertisements. Flash banners are generally smaller and they can be used to show videos and sounds. This certainly improves the visibility of the flash banners, since they are more animated and more attractive than static banners. These eye-catching banners can also be designed to include interactive functions that allow viewers to do various things such as clicking and even typing text on them. Certain things are better explained using images and animated words. Diagrams, flow charts and other types of charts are delivered better using flash banners than using plain text.
Website owners who wish to use flash banner in their websites should not use stock flash banners. It is better if you design your own flash banners because other people might be using the same design and your flash banner will not be special. By designing your own flash banners, you are free to use whichever image, video or audio files you like. Customization is unlimited to only your creativity and imagination. Use your own company or website logo, put your own images and sounds, and reach your target audience. Furthermore, you will be able to create a unique, one-of-a-kind flash banner. The message is conveyed accurately when you design your own banner and you can control the size so that it will not be too heavy and slow down the website.
To create flash banners, one is usually required to have some knowledge of ActionScript. However, nowadays there are more options of applications that can be used to create flash banners by just using a mouse. Whichever application you choose, be sure to create flash banners that are not too large in size, as most websites require flash banners to be within certain limits, before you are allowed to advertise at their websites. Also always remember that flash offers a considerable advantage over the animated gif banners because of the reasons just mentioned, so it only makes sense that you use flash banners for your advertising. Remember that attractiveness plays a huge role in catching the attention of visitors to your website. The more eye-catching your flash banners are, the more visitors will click on your advertisements and as a result, you will get more traffic from potential customers.
Online shopping can be both convenient and confusing. Because you no longer need to drive and wait in line just to complete your weekly shopping, buy goods on sale or make a go for that latest season’s wardrobe, buying products online enables you to save fuel and time. Not only does it offer ease in the selection of items, online stores make it easier for buyers to compare product features and prices. This way, it enables ordinary shoppers to get the best deals in every item that they intend to buy.
What’s more exciting is that online store prices are lower than those in conventional boutique and retail stores. However, there will always be a risk that the wrong items will be sent to your home by mistake. And because of the complicated systems used in every purchase transaction, there is a chance that the delivery of your purchase may be delayed. For a person that is not Internet savvy, online shopping experiences can bring inconveniences rather than convenience.
To guide novice online shoppers in their online shopping experience, we have compiled some of the pointers that can be useful in making the experience worthwhile. You can even print this page so you can easily review the tips as you shop.
Follow your instincts: If you are not comfortable with the idea of buying or bidding the item on the internet, then it’s best not to do it. Avoid feeling pressured to place your order immediately. Take time browsing other online stores for the same item so as to compare the prices and features of the items that you need to buy.
Learn about web auctions: Online product auctions operate similar to traditional auctions. The item goes to the highest bidder. However, to avoid any trouble with the items, try to familiarise yourself with the rules and policies of the auction site. Take time studying or reading its legal terms as in warranties and refund policy.
Double-check the item price: Online shops can sell new and used/old items that are still in marketable condition. But if you happen to encounter a price deal that is too cheap, be suspicious. Sometimes, £10 becomes £1 due to typographical error. Also, it is advised to check the prices of the item that you intend to buy in other online stores before you buy to yield savings on possible discounts.
Privacy policy: Avoid dealing with sites that do not have privacy policy. Often, the seller will ask the buyer some information. Some of which concerns credit card numbers and other security information. Without a privacy policy, you are subject to higher risk of identity theft.
Return, refund and shipping policies: This information will be useful if your purchased items stay too long in the verification and delivery stage and in cases when the items delivered to you have manufacturing defects or is already damaged.
Credit card: When shopping online, the use of credit card is the safest way to pay for items. Since it does not instantly credit the purchase to your own money, you can easily trace back unauthorised transactions. The terms of using credit cards will protect you against fraud.
Make online shopping an enjoyable experience. Learn how it works and you will be rewarded with tremendous gains. The time flexibility and savings that are enjoyed by most online shoppers complements the demands of today’s fast paced lifestyle. It’s a shame to be left behind.
In preparation for an initial meeting with a new client, we were asked to preview their website to see if we could come-up with some ideas for re-branding the company, and invigorating product sales.
The client was suitably impressed with our thoughts but there was one problem, the product line that we stressed was not the focus of the company. The client explained that despite the fact most of their current website was devoted to a particular product line, it was not the product that differentiated them from the competition, nor was it the product that made them the most money. Once this was explained our entire focus shifted, and we were able to develop a website concept, and webmedia presentation that focused attention were it belonged.
The experience drove home the fact that many websites confuse potential customers by inadvertently leading audiences down the wrong path, hindering profitable sales rather than promoting them.
Pick A Card, Any Card
Most companies sell a variety of products or services, but they are not all created equal, some are more important, and more profitable than others. At the heart of any website design project is the underlying goal of attracting attention, and directing that attention to the product, service, or concept that is being marketed. In that regard, an effective website sales presentation is a lot like a magic act.
The PsyBlog, Understand Your Mind, recently published an article entitled, "Psychology of Magic: 3 Critical Techniques," in which they reported that the Association for Scientific Study of Consciousness held a conference called "The Magic of Consciousness Symposium" where cognitive neuroscientists and psychologists heard an enlightening series of well-known magicians explain the psychology and techniques behind magic acts.
What cognitive scientists have come to realize is that after hundreds of years of experimentation before live audiences, magicians have mastered a series of highly effective cognitive techniques that need to be studied, a realization that should not elude any serious marketing manager, since the essence of any effective sales presentation is cognitive learning, defined by MedicineNet.com as "the process of being aware, knowing, thinking, learning and judging."
Psychological Mind-bending Techniques
In simple terms, magicians use a series of psychological mind-bending techniques, to convince audiences to believe in something that is simply not possible; so imagine how powerful and persuasive a sales presentation could be by using these same techniques to deliver a presentation where the product or service actually performs as advertised.
We are not talking about cheating people, or misrepresenting products, but rather teaching people the benefits of an offering by focusing attention, sharpening awareness, and altering perception, the three main ingredients in any convincing magic act, and any effective sales presentation.
Focusing Attention, Sharpening Awareness, Altering Perception
The problem of attention is three-fold: people are impatient due to lifestyle demands, socialization, and neural hardwiring. Business pressure and modern life-styles put a premium on the amount of time people will invest in learning what you have to say.
Web audiences have been raised on quick-cut music videos, action movies and video games, and as a result are socialized at an early age to make snap-decisions on minimum input.
At the same time our brains employ a hardwired, leap-of-logic, pattern recognition survival mechanism that induces quick decisions on what is important and what is seemingly irrelevant.
With an audience predisposed to hair-trigger decision-making, the ability to attract, hold, and direct attention is vital to effective Web presentation, a skill-set refined by magicians over years of practice.
One of the three techniques mentioned in the article "Psychology of Magic: 3 Critical Techniques" is 'psychological misdirection, a technique illustrated in an illusion called the 'vanishing ball trick,' performed by Dr. Gustav Kuhn of York University.
The 'Vanishing Ball Trick'
A ball is tossed into the air and caught with one hand while the magician follows the flight of the ball with his eyes. The movement is repeated several times establishing the trajectory of the ball, then on the final toss the magician doesn't let go of the ball but repeats the same arm motion and eye movement, following the imagined flight of the non existent ball. What the brain registers is the ball disappearing in mid flight.
Evidently there is a tenth of a second delay between what the eye physically sees and what the brain registers. This could be a fatal human flaw if what is in front of us is a hungry tiger rather than a magician. That tenth of a second lag could mean the difference between life and death.
As a consequence the brain has developed a sophisticated pattern recognition process that fills in the blanks. We recognize a series of events and leap to the conclusion that something is going to happen. In this case that something is the flight of a ball, a cognitive pattern established by the magicians repetitive arm and eye movements.
Sales Presentations Are Exercises In Teaching New Behaviors
A sales presentation is nothing more than an effort to teach an audience a new learned behavior - buying the product, service or concept being presented. This can only be achieved if a presentation focuses viewer attention on a single concept, and repeats that concept so that it becomes a recognized pattern.
A sale's audience like a magician's audience must be sold on the presentation. Each audience starts off being both cynical and resistant, but a good magician like a good salesman will repeat the presentation several times, each time varying it slightly in order to overcome each potential objection, what magicians call 'closing the doors' and what advertisers call a marketing campaign.
The ad nauseam repetition of television commercials is nothing more than an attempt to teach the viewing audience a new set of behaviors, so that they will recognize the pattern and respond in the right circumstances - we are all network television's version of Pavlov's dogs.
Entertaining Clients is Serious Business
The best commercials are the ones that are based on a thematic series (the Mac commercials are a great example), with each spot over-coming a single objection, ultimately teaching the audience a new learned purchasing behavior. Your website is your own communication channel, capable of delivering programming content that alters behavior, and forms new purchasing patterns.
The trick is to keep your audience interested long enough to establish the new intended pattern of behavior. Business owners have to get past the notion that entertaining presentations are somehow non-functional. Entertaining clients is serious business.
Website presentations must attract, focus, and hold viewer attention by delivering an entertaining series of performances that establish patterns of behavior by clever repetition that overcome objections using verbal and visual repetition.
Conclusion
The psychological principles employed by magicians are very similar to the ones used in effective sales presentations. The Internet is capable of delivering the kind of compelling video and audio webmedia that changes audience behavior and purchasing patterns. Business must get rid of the digital flip charts and start communicating effective, meaningful presentations that deliver magical results.
