Online storage service, currently in beta, may be too simple for some users.
Windows Live SkyDrive is part of Microsoft's Windows Live family of Web 2.0-style online offerings, but it lacks connections to other Microsoft services such as Hotmail, MSN Messenger, and the Live Spaces blogging service.
You receive 500MB of free online storage (though files can be no bigger than 50MB each), and you can store any type of file to a Private, Public, or Shared folder. No one except you, with your log-in name and password, can access Private folders; anyone on the Internet can view your Public folders, but only people you invite can see Shared folders. You can restrict invitees' access to certain Shared folders or grant them Contributor status for viewing, adding, modifying, and deleting items in a folder.
For now, invitees must already have a Microsoft user name and password before they can access a Shared folder--no problem if they use Hotmail or Windows Messenger, or otherwise have an MSN or Windows Live ID, but an inconvenience if they don't. Microsoft says that a future release of the service will support sharing folders with folks who lack a Microsoft account.
I found Windows Live SkyDrive much easier to use than rival services such as XDrive and Streamload, but the service does lack some features that its competitors offer. XDrive allows you to stream stored audio files, for example, and Streamload performs automated backups and lets you synchronize data between two computers.
The Windows Live SkyDrive beta shows early signs of being a great component of Microsoft's vast empire of online services. Nevertheless, we'd like to see more features, such as the ability to save Hotmail e-mail attachments to SkyDrive folders or to create a slide show of images stored in Public folders. We'd also appreciate better service integration, along the lines of Google's Gmail and Docs & Spreadsheets. But Microsoft beats Google to the punch with this online backup tool--even though it still needs work.
SpinRite 6 to the Rescue

So your hard drive bit the dust before you got around to creating that backup you've been putting off for, oh, a year or so? Download a copy of Gibson Research's SpinRite 6 drive recovery and maintenance software, and it might be able to bring your data back from the brink.
Version 6, the venerable application's first overhaul since 1998, comes through with improved functionality and much-needed support for the NTFS file system: It finally works with Windows XP. Like its predecessors, it has the unique ability to access the surface of a hard drive (or other magnetic drive) without engaging the OS. As a result, it can manipulate data at lower levels than can other maintenance programs such as ScanDisk, enabling it to perform more-rigorous maintenance, to predict failures, and even to recover data from badly damaged drives.
I downloaded the $89 full version--upgrades run from $29 to $69--and installed it on a bootable CD (alternatively, you can put it on a USB key flash drive or a floppy). The new edition launches from within a self-contained version of FreeDOS, and navigation is fairly straightforward.
In my tests, performing basic maintenance on a 31GB partition took about 6 hours and returned a seemingly clean bill of health. The software fails to explain most of its results, however; and as we went to press, GRC was still finishing the documentation.
Fortunately, SpinRite 6 is less ambiguous when it encounters a distressed drive. I put the app to work on four magnetically damaged floppy disks, and it lit up the screen with flashing graphics as it worked to recover my data. It saved three of the four.
SpinRite 6 is no substitute for regular backups. Still, having the software around for maintenance--and knowing it's there in an emergency--makes it worth the price.

Some words about Camtasia Studio. This is a great screen recording software that can a region of the screen, a window or the entire screen. Since this is the Camtasia Studio it also offers applications to capture sound, edit the recording and burn it on a disk. Videos can also be saved in various formats once the recording finishes including avi and flash video.
Giving away older versions of your software for free with an option to upgrade to the newest version for less is a valid business approach that not many software developers seem to follow. The benefit for the software companies is that the user gets used to their software and will be more likely to upgrade to a product that they are already familiar with.
SnagIt is a screen capturing software that is able to capture anything that is displayed on the screen including scrolling webpages. What I like is that you can create profiles that suit your needs and grab not only images and areas of the screen but also text and video. This is something that is missing from MWSnap, the software that I normally use to capture part of my screen.
There is another profile that I would like to mention, it downloads all images from a website which can be quite useful as well. I’m not that fond of the edit and organize categories because I prefer to edit images in a real image editor instead. Still, the option to edit images using the Snagit editor, to batch convert images or create a webpage with the captured images might appeal to some users.
